Audition Process

Qualifications

All you need, is to have a love of singing

Please note: Priority during the audition process will go to current York University students.

Available on these dates:

  • 6:30-9:30 Mondays and Wednesdays for rehearsals throughout the year excluding exam periods and holidays
  • October 18-20 for WIBI’s Annual Mandatory Retreat
  • February and March for The Varsity Vocals International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA)

Timeframe

2025 audition sign-ups are open from August 31 until September 23, 11:59 PM EST. We will only accept late submissions on a case by case basis.

Selected auditionees will be asked to come for an in-person audition, which will occur during a half an hour time slot on either the 25 or 28th of September . Time slots are offered on a first come first serve basis, however, should none of the available times work for you, please feel free to email us at wibi.acappella@gmail.com and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Final callbacks will then be held on September 29.


Process

Audition video submissions will include a song of the auditionee’s choice (approx. 1 minute).

The subsequent inperson audition process will include the following:

  • Musicianship testing, to assess the level of the auditionee as we accept a wide range of vocalists levels.
  • The auditionee sings 1 song of their choice which can be the same or different from the video submission (1 minute)
  • Singing a few bars of a voice part of your choosing from a requested song (TBA)

The final call back will be held with all the WIBI members where you will be asked to join WIBI in a rehearsal environment to to see how well you fit into the team.

FAQ

Is WIBI Limited to music majors?

WIBI is open to any and all applicants interested in music, regardless of musical background. Several of our members, both past and present, are from various faculties across York.

What does WIBI look for in auditionees?

People who are enthusiastic, motivated to learn, and excited to make great music!

What voice sections are needed?

We are currently looking for all voice types i.e. soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, and vocal percussion.

Do I have to be a York student?

No, however, priority and preference is for current York students as WIBI A Cappella is registered as a York University club.

Do I need to sing a whole song?

No, please sing either a verse and a chorus or a chorus and a bridge to demonstrate your vocal ability to us.

What genre would be best?

Preferably pop, R&B, indie, and other contemporary songs to be consistent with WIBI’s typical repertoire.

What if I miss the deadline?

Reach out to us! We will review these applications on a case-by-case basis but please try your best to submit your audition on time.

What do rehearsals look like this year?

We will be having two mandatory rehearsals each week, in-person, Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 PM.

Can I re-audition if I didn’t/don’t get in?

You are more than welcome to re-audition to WIBI once auditions have reopened! If you are a returning auditionee, feel free to audition as well.

How much music does WIBI learn?

We learn approximately eight (8) charts per semester

Do I need to know how to read sheet music?

While it will be useful, WIBI also provides audio files for individual parts to cater to auditory learners.

When will I hear back from you?

Expect to hear from us around a day or two after auditions close!
